Photos taken in 1978 and 2005

Ongar Platform 1978

Ongar Platform 1978*

This photo is taken just outside the platform entrance, at Ongar. The rolling stock in use on the line in 1977 was, 1962 stock as can be seen here. Also in the distance you can see the Ongar Signal box at this time disused.

The small building a few metres away is the porters room. Just round the corner to the building just to the left, is the Gentlemens toilet.

As you can see the platform has changed guite alot. One thing i am sure you will notice this photograph is roughly in the same position as the other above, but the DMU is parked closer to the station as where the LU 1962 stock would have been parked just in front of this photograph.

In the distance you will see the signal box has been dimolished, and the original LU standard signal out of action, but still in place.

The posters have gone and the benches removed when the station closed in 1994.

But as you can see most of the  buildings are still intact, for instance the porters room.

Ongar 'Roundal' sign 1978

Here is a classic example of one of Ongar's station name plates. In the background to the left you can see part of the disused Ongar goods shed.

Ongar Station Sign 2005

As you can see, the 'roundal' has long been removed but the base of it remains.

A new nameplate has been fitted. As you can see the bottem is a mix of green and red. Well before blue became EOR's corporate, green and red was the intended colour.

In the background you can see nothing remains of the good's shed and the area is now used to store vintage buses.

North weald station 1978

North Weald Station 1978*

As you can see the station at this time is run by London Underground.

Having the famous blue station and white station name plate and the famous Underground 'roundal'.

The window to the left of the doorway is really fake, in side the window is the strong room. It was used to hold the money and any items needing safe keeping.

As you can see the station hasn't changed much apart from the LU signage been removed, and replaced with an EOR sign.

If you look up at the top left window and look right, you can see the original fixings used to hold the Underground sign. If you wish look up at the 1977 picture to compare.

North Weald Platform 1978

As you can see 1978 marked a sad year for North weald station with the passing loop being removed, never to be returned.

I have been told that only two weeks after the track was removed the platform was re-tarmaced. Though i cannot be sure of this happening.

You can see the LU 1962 stock pulling into the station.

As you can see this picture is taken roughly the same spot as the other above. The station has not changed much over the years as you can see.

Of coarse with the LU signage being removed not alot has changed.

The picture was taken with the DMU pulling out of the station.

Blake Hall Station 1978

Blake Hall Station 1978

Well here is Blake Hall station in 1978. Being a very neat and small station it only managed on average 6 passengers a day.

Of coarse you can see the station has all the usual LU signage and posters.

Sadly the station closed in 1981 and turned into a private residance.

So i am afraid a photo today is not possible as the station is now private property.

Not many of the stations features are around today but can be viewed best by the nearby bridge crossing the railway.

The station now only having 6 passengers a day and only three years of life left.

Here an LU train has pulled in with only the camera man getting off.

Blake Hall Platform 2005

It can be seen here by a passing train heading for Ongar, the original platform area of Blake Hall.

Of coarse it is obveous that this could of been a station with the house and Goods yards gates still in place.
